In 2023 Google sold Google Domains to Squarespace, and WordPress.com wanted to welcome those customers while fixing a domain experience that worked differently in every place. As the main designer on domains, working with a PM and an engineer, I audited every domain flow and designed the search and results and the bulk transfer.
Every domain flow worked a bit differently.
In June 2023 I audited every place where people search for, buy, transfer or manage a domain, and compared ours with GoDaddy, DreamHost and Google Domains. We had four different domain picker formats, no clear top option and no reason for our recommendations, and we showed only 10 results although we support more than 300 domain endings.

Help people decide.
In the old results, recommendations didn't always match the search and badges on every row made the domain endings, like .com or .blog, hard to see. I put the two best options first and larger and made the rest quick to scan. I also designed choosing several domains at once, which adds a step for new sites and makes the free first year harder to explain, so it shipped first in the domain-only flow in October 2023.

Many domains, one row at a time.
When Google sold Google Domains to Squarespace, WordPress.com offered free transfers, so this work was urgent and ran alongside the audit. A stakeholder with dozens of domains asked to paste them all at once, but then errors are hard to match to the right domain, so we shipped one row per domain first and kept pasting for later. I also designed the path from the campaign pages to checkout.

Shipped from July 2023.
The bulk transfer shipped in July 2023 and choosing several domains at once in October, and the redesigned search and results followed. I worked on each piece with a PM and an engineer, while Google Domains customers were moving to WordPress.com.
